"Sylabration" to raise money for statewide tornado relief

"Sylabration" to raise money for statewide tornado relief

The purpose behind the "Sylabration" festival held in Sylacauga is twofold: to raise money for tornado victims across the state and to celebrate a city-wide honor.

Sylacauga has been named in the top 100 Best Communities in the Nation for Young People a total of five times by the organization America's Promise Alliance. But beyond recognizing the city's honor, Sylacauga's mayor Sam Wright hopes the June 2 "Sylabration" will be about reaching out to communities hit in the April 27 tornadoes.

"The City of Sylacauga was spared on April 27, and the least we can do is give back," Wright said in a release. “On June 2, we invite you all to come join a day of families helping families.”

The celebration is being held in Sylacauga's Legion Stadium from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Live music acts include the country group Diamond Rio and the band Otis Day and the Knights.

Bo Bikes Bama holds online silent auction

Bo Bikes Bama holds online silent auction

Bo Jackson's fundraising efforts for tornado relief didn't end when he crossed the finish line of a 300 mile charity ride in Tuscaloosa. An online silent auction that continues through 9 p.m. is raising more money for the Alabama Governor's Emergency Relief Fund.

Bo Jackson's five-day charity ride took him from north Alabama at Lake Guntersville State Park through other tornado-ravaged areas of the state, including Cullman, Jasper and Bessemer before ending in Tuscaloosa.

The Bo Bikes Bama campaign had a goal of raising $1 million and is currently more than halfway to that mark with $503,813. The online silent auction offers all five of Bo's custom-made TREK bikes, signed sports memorabilia, vacation packages, artwork and more. So far, the highest bid is around $800 for a Bo Bikes Bama jersey signed and worn by Lance Armstrong.

911 deals with butt dials

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Back pockets and purses are
very popular places to put your cell phone, but often times you can make a call
you didn't intend to.

Birmingham Police Sergeant
Johnny Williams said dozens of those unintended or "butt dial" calls are made
directly to dispatch.

"We may average about
50 or so per day depending upon the day," said Williams. Williams said
that number can fluctuate depending on the day.

Birmingham isn't the only
area seeing a high volume of misdials. Shelby County's 9-1-1 center answered
more than 18,000 last year and Talladega County had about 35,000 unintended
calls. Large numbers but in the grand scheme of things people like Andrew Clark
don't think it's too bad.

"Compared to the
population it doesn't sound very high and with all the cell phones and
different phones and things like that so that doesn't sound terribly high for
the population," said Clark.
