BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Isaac is making his presence know across central Alabama today, with lots of clouds and scattered tropical downpours. A new tornado watch has been issued for far southwest Alabama and this does not include counties in the Fox 6 coverage area.

We will continue to experience scattered shower and isolated thunderstorm activity throughout the rest of today. The general rain motion will be from south-southeast to northwest.

There are lots of questions locally regarding the tornado potential and wind impact as Isaac moves inland. We are happy to report that the present track and forecast shows the main tropical storm force wind field remaining well south of our area. Tropical storm forced winds (39 mph+) extend out 185 miles so these gusts should be felt along the Alabama coasts. A sustained 60 mph was measured at the Mouth of the Mississippi River.

The model runs over the past 24 hours have been a lot more consistent with regard to one thing. Isaac will make a landfall west of Alabama. The question remains how far west as some models like GFDL suggests a landfall point near Houston, TX. Thoughts this afternoon are that Isaac will make a landfall over southeast Louisiana. Based on this track, a strong onshore flow and feeder band activity should bring strong tidal surge, torrential rain, and a tornado threat to the Alabama Gulf coast. What is concerning forecasters today is the threat that exists for New Orleans.

When will Isaac make landfall?

Based on current forecasts, Isaac should make a landfall Tuesday night near the Mouth of the Mississippi River. Landfall may be just west of the mouth of the Mississippi River.
