Has spring sprung in your neighborhood?

Has spring sprung in your neighborhood?

It's only the second day of spring, but the season seems to already be in full swing in many parts of Alabama. Azalea bushes, dogwood trees and Bradford Pears are starting to bloom, tiny green buds are appearing on the trees and the thin layer of pollen everywhere is a sure sign that this new season is here.

If you have a springtime photo from your neighborhood you'd like to share with us, we'd love to include it in a slideshow! You can send it to us by:

High Impact Severe Weather Event Friday

High Impact Severe Weather Event Friday

We are bracing for another HIGH IMPACT severe weather event tomorrow evening.  This includes a threat for strong tornadoes including those that create EF3 and above damage.  The atmosphere will get primed today with a warm front lifting to the north during the afternoon.   In fact, a few strong storms are not out of the question later today as we become more and more unstable.  Temperatures will climb into the mid to 70s this afternoon with a strong southerly wind.  We'll be even warmer tomorrow with highs reaching 80.  Models suggest two low pressure areas forming - the one just to our north will increase wind shear with low level winds reaching over 60kts during the afternoon and evening.

Severe storms expected Wed. afternoon

Severe storms expected Wed. afternoon

We're preparing for our first round of severe storms today.  Thunderstorms will move into West Alabama by 2pm with the primary threat damaging winds.  I'm confident a squall line will form ahead of the cold front and move from west to east across the state.  The line of storms should cross the I-65 corridor by 4-6pm and then move into East Alabama after 7pm.

For areas north of the Tennessee River, there is a threat for tornadoes as well during the afternoon.  The threat should end by the the evening hours.  This is the Storm Prediction Centers risk probability map.  The tornado risk in the Fox 6 viewing area is between 2-5% with higher risks.  The 15% hatched area includes Florence, Decatur, and Huntsville.

Isolated Storm Damage Near Sylacauga

Isolated Storm Damage Near Sylacauga

Several storm systems have impacted our state over the past three to six weeks making for another busy year in weather. It looked like we may actually make it through one event unscathed yesterday, however there was an isolated damage report from Talladega County.

According to LeighAnn Butler with the Talladega EMA, some damage occurred near Sylacauga yesterday. Power-lines and trees were damaged on Dog Wood Circle and Rush Road. We’ve learned that power has since been restored. The EMA did not report damage to any living structures, although there was damage to fencing. At this time we don’t know whether this is the result of straight-line wind gusts or a small scale tornado.
